Taking the Long Way Home
January 30th, 2008
I thought I would take a moment to get some of my pix off my phone via the handy dandy Bluetooth on my Mac. This isn’t anything new to most people, but most people probably don’t have a cell phone that still refuses to send or receive multimedia picture messages. That’s right, if I receive a picture I have to go online to the special website, login with the code I am texted, and look at the silly photo there.
What I ended up with are some fun shots I took in the last couple weeks at various point on my commute home. The one on the overpass was taken tonight as I took the long way home from the L’Enfant Plaza metro stop after the train I was on broke and forced us all off. No way was I trying to get on the next train full of double the passengers. So I walked down 7th Street SW and grabbed this nice pic of 395 at dusk, cars quickly getting nowhere as they headed back to the suburbs of NoVa (Northern Virgina) and beyond. I always get a kick out of walking over all those cars. I also got a kick out the fact that I didn’t get lost.
Monday night I grabbed a shot of the mysteriously empty metro car I was on as I made my way back from the chiropractor in Clarendon on the orange line. It’s always nice, but strange, to see cars that empty. Looks like we were about to hit Foggy Bottom, the first stop in DC right after you travel under the Potomac.
And below is a picture I took on a crowded car several weeks ago of this chick who was just too cool with her punky little colorful sneakers, tongues out and all. It is hard to get a good idea with this pic, but it really was grin-inducing in the swarm of businessmen and suits to see such a little ray of sunshine and unabashed funk amongst a sea of neutral shoes. I felt kind of like a stalker snapping pictures. Luckily no one notices or, if they do, cares about what you’re doing on the metro. It’s amazing how oblivious we all are with our iPods and books.
So, just thought I’d share a little taste of my daily routine. I actually think it is good for me to get out and walk to and from work everyday, because if I didn’t my body would certainly be worse off, especially since I sit in a chair all day and stare at a computer with shapes on it. This, at least, keeps me less out-of-shape and provides a brief encounter with nature. Squirrels! And sometimes on my walks I remember to actually “see” instead of just “look”…and that’s when I end up with some marginally cool stuff to share.
Happy commuting!
