Summer Nostalgia
September 1st, 2008
I’ve been waiting patiently for the end of summer to come so I could post my sad little collection of “summer’s over” songs. They’re more bittersweet than outright sad, and I noticed a trend here and there with their general vibe and wanted to jot them down so that I could share them later.
What better time than Labor Day?
Each of these three just touches on a note of the end…of summer, and other things. Drifting. They’re nothing new, and you’ve probably heard them before, but they’re special to me for many random inside reasons and always touch a nerve. Enjoy :)
Decemberists - Summersong
REM - Nightswimming
Fiona Apple - Pale September

TOO FUNNY! I was just listening to Pale September (which I always re-listen to this time of year too)!

Yeah it’s so sparsely great/comforting! I was just thinking….it’s kind of abstractly uplifting in a way too…”and my winter giving way to warm…” and everything. But overall, it just makes me feel like I’m surrounded by a bunch of trees that are losing their leaves as a chilly fall breeze blows through.
It also reminds me of being back in Ohio in middle school when I was really getting into her first album, and I would fall asleep with it playing on my walkman in bed. “Slow Like Honey” always lulled me away because it was so good…(”so I stretch myself across like a bridge…”)

I love Slow Like Honey - I think it’s my favorite on that album (I like the latter half of that CD way better than the former).

You like The First Taste too right? That was way up there as my favorite…and I also loved Carrion. You’re right though…about the first half. While it was still good, I for one was a bit over-exposed to it with Shadowboxer and Criminal and all that stuff. The other stuff was more like a good buried treasure!

Exactly, exactly, and once again all our favorites are the same :)
