SONG OF THE DAY - Supertramp

Supertramp - Breakfast in America
So my next song of the day is going to be really old and obscure, just the way that I like it. I’m sure most of you guys are familiar with the remake of Supertramp’s song “Breakfast in America” by Gym Class Heroes, called “Cupid’s Chokehold”. I have to admit, I’ll listen to that song too, but only because the melodic/lyrical decency is derived from the original masterpiece heard here.
I don’t know when I started becoming obsessed with this song, but I do remember playing it over and over on the way to the metro one day and just getting totally sucked into the chorus. The main thing that does it for me is that retro, circus-like clarinet that gets looped thru each chorus in the background. I can’t explain it, there’s just something inescapably awesome and magical about that sound dodging and weaving everywhere as you’re walking along in your mundane life on the way to work, or anywhere for that matter. I tend to like very methodically melodic songs as well…where the notes are almost mapped out in a very staccato manor. This kind of exhibits that, a lot of control. And I love the “..w-HEY!”s and “Hey-ohm”s scattered around throughout.
I also hear there are many fans of the well-placed tuba. I can dig that.
