SONG OF THE DAY - Obi Best

August 28th, 2010

Sentimental Education by Obi Best

Wow it’s been awhile! Well I felt compelled to post again for the sheer love of music and sharing. Since LaLa.com closed its doors I’ve been a bit sad/hesitant as it was my go-to choice for embedding mini albums in here. There are so many new music sharing sites popping up though….complete with embedding and customization options. The other day I discovered 8tracks where you can compile your own sets of 8 tracks, either through their extensive library or by uploading your own. Very Muxtape-y feeling (Muxtape I miss you!).

Then the other day I discovered Soundcloud which serves similar purposes. Also awesome–try making your own mix and sharing! I ended up there because I followed a link from Facebook pointing to a new EP from one of my favorite artists–Obi Best! And that’s what brings me here today. Hooray!

I have been listening to Obi Best’s music since around November 2008 when one of my favorite quirky blogger friends posted about them. That album soon became part of my daily life and wove itself into the fabric of my post-breakup-finding-myself-phase…same with The Delays…so it will always hold a special feeling.

Then that February I saw Obi Best at a small concert in DC (accompanied by my ex, oddly enough), and not until this new EP have I heard some of those songs again. For some reason I am obsessed with “Tropical Fish”. I think it has to do with the fact that I was so used to hearing the same songs by them that when this appeared out of nowhere live at that concert, it left a big (unbeknownst to me at the time) impression…it takes me back to that feeling of going to an event with R and still being close friends at the time…that innocent but fading sweetness that was so long ago.

But the song itself is just adorable….I love songs that keep reaching upwards and shifting…it’s hard to explain. But the actual melody and vocals literally always go upwards…it’s what I call “earnest yearning”. That’s actually a tag in my iTunes. I love the metaphor of having “a different animal” instead of butterflies in your tummy too. :)

The rest of the tracks are fun as well, very solid, but the first one is my special song. The wave of memories that came over me when I first recognized it and knew from where, man that was great. I actually gave a little girly shout at work. Woot!
