online reading

Where I’ve been going regularly/randomly on the Internets these days (by the way, I have Sesame Street on while I’m writing this! Hey, when did they jazz up the intro music? It’s like I’m old. I’ll let you in on a little-known secret as well–I adore Beaker!):

  1. the 405
I discovered this little place randomly while surfing some artist pages on Last.fm one day. I was a bit annoyed by the shameless self-promotion, but they are actually a really neat little blog! This is where I discover some of my random music and learn about other obscure things that people like me would be interested in. It was originally written by a select group of mainly Brits, but slowly they’ve expanded it to others who want to write as well, from all around the world. In fact, I got the invite to write there too, but I have yet to muster the courage, and am currently guest blogging for…

Yep, this is another one of my favorite blogs full of random observations, fashion lust, and girly rants. I met Allison (who is even more adorable than me! *gasp*) via my boyfriend’s small group of online friends who used to join fanatical Christian groups on Facebook and, while posing as fellow zealots, proceeded to bombard their boards with the most inappropriate onslaughts of ridicule and sarcasm you’d ever seen. Oh, these intellectual types, I’ll tell ya. I’m just a simple girl who loves fashion, photography, web design, and kittens. So, naturally I gravitated to this blog whose writer shares a similar background, where I’ve been asked to guest post (look for the label “guest blog”) indefinitely while she gets her life together (we’ve actually never met, and she only lives in VA!).

  3. Crash and Burn Girl
Another little indie music blog written by a girl with awesome taste in GA. She has a love of Swedes…and Eisley, Metric, etc. Somewhere I go when I want to try something new.

  4. the Onion’s A.V. Club (MSCL retrospective)
I’ve been REALLY into this one when I get the chance: the A.V. Club is doing a weekly retrospective on every episode of My So-Called Life where I can dreamily walk down memory lane any time that I want to! From Rayanne’s ho-y, drunken ways to Ricky’s eyeliner to Brian Krakow’s lovable blonde fro to Angela’s “You’re so beautiful, it hurts to look at you” obsession with Jared Leto’s Jordan Catalano (probably one of the prettiest guys ever…definitely my type of crushing-material, as well)…it’s all there. Oh, and the comments afterwards are almost more golden than the reviews themselves. Also a good place for Project Runway and other quirky TV show recaps.

  5. Pitchfork
I tend to forget about this one because it’s buried in a different bookmarks folder, but this is where I go to see what’s up on the music scene and quickly feel inferior and “uncool”. I’m really not as up on everything as people might think, but it’s fun to read their reviews (even tho they are usually snobby and self-absorbded, as are most reviews of anything “cool”) and interviews.

So you are annoyed by shameless self promotion, but you dont mind doing it when you are part of the website? :P

  • Brandi Says:

Not when I am sharing the random news on my own website, no! And I was only annoyed for like .5 seconds, soon replaced with intrigue by their awesomeness :).

Aw, thanks for mentioning me! Sorry I’m so slow on the uptake….

And I beg to differ on the adorableness thing. You’re DEFINITELY the most adorable person I kinda sorta know!
